Story

The BIG Swim  was an idea dreamed up by local business man Steve Collard.

A group of friends, supporters of the crew and The Captains Cabin have raised over £20,000 in the last 5 years the event has been running.

This years event, Sunday 19th September, swim starts at 15:00, swimmers expected back around 16:00.

2010 is a big year, the recession has hit donations hard (see BBC story http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-11120385) so please dig deep and support us in exceeding our target.

About the swimmers;

Rachel Stacey - "First timer for the BIG swim, involved heavily in the local water skiing scene, has watched for a number of years and wants to give it a go!"

Polly Hunt - "Another first timer, where swimming really runs in the family (Polly is the niece of Nick Hunt). Polly has been preparing for the event this year with a number of sea swims, this is the BIG one"

Nick Hunt - "Never missed a BIG swim, even after major knee surgery!!!. Nick has an uncanny knack of picking the fastest line from Brean Down to Madeira Cove. One of the ex Water Polo players and an avid sea swimmer in Weston for many years"

Steve Collard - "The event was Steve's idea and he has been the major driving force behind it's success. A successful local business man and ex water polo player, Steve is back for a win this year, of course it's not about the winning it's the taking part :-)"

Matt Purslow - "Another first time BIG swimmer, (why don't more come back to do the event). Ex Water polo player, musician and part of another big Water Polo playing family in Weston. Not sure what Matt training has been, but he knows what is ahead of him"

Heath Hardy - "Heath has never missed a swim, a successful local restaurateur, loves sea swimming in Weston and a big supporter of the local RNLI. Heath is a "renewed" athlete, taking on the challenge of his first half marathon this year with his sights set on a first win in the BIG swim this year"

Andrew Craven - "Zimbabwean born, strong sea swimmer unknown to all and could be the surprise of the event. Andrew is an IT consultant working locally and intrigued by the event and photos in the Captain Cabin, looking forward to the challenge"

Sean McHenry - "Another ex Water polo player this will be the 4 th time he has taken part in the BIG swim. Local triathlete, loves the open water but normally in a wet suit. This year taking part in speedo's, worried it will slow him down"
