Story
Hello, and thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
My name is Will; I am an enthusiastic 19 year old cross-country runner, and I will be running in a 10K cross-country road race on May 4th, 2014, and I have decided to make this run special by running for my charity.
Cancer is a leading cause of death in the UK, causing more than 1 in 4 of all deaths in the UK. More than 331,000 people were diagnosed with cancer in 2011 in the UK; around 910 people every day, or one person every two minutes. Of these, more than 430 people died from cancer every day, or 1 person every 4 minutes. More than 1 in 3 people in the UK will develop a form of cancer in their lifetime; In 2013, no fewer than 434,115 people suffered from over 40 different types of cancer, and of these patients 159,178 died. Two of these forms of cancer are Prostate Cancer, which affected 41,376 males in 2013, of whom 10,793 died, and Breast Cancer, which affected 50,285 women and men in 2013, of whom 11,762 died. In the world, there are more than 200 known types of cancer.
I am running this race in memory of a very close family member, and for another family member who is inspirationally fighting cancer.
Cancer Research UK is a fantastic charity; supporting more than 4,000 scientists, doctors and nurses across the UK, it is the world's leading charity dedicated to beating cancer through research, their work is unmatched, as they continue to research into new ways in helping to prevent incidence and death by cancer. Survival has been doubled over the past 40 years, and every day in the UK there are more than 400 people diagnosed with cancer who will survive the disease for more than 10 years, thanks to research.
This year, my target time for the 10K run is under 40 minutes, so I'd better stop typing now and get training for it!
Thank you.
