The new decade dawned and I made the rash resolutions to start swimming again and also do something for charity. I've not swum much since school but on New Year's Eve I registered for the Great London Swim 2010. It's a mile, open water swim in the Royal Victoria Docks in London in July. You can see more about the swim here I'm raising money for 2 great charities. Please feel free to support either, and preferably both! I've been a member of Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) since the early 1990s. Their core objective is to ensure that anyone who wishes to enjoy the water environment, whether as a year-round surfer or a summer time beach-goer, can do so without fear of sickness or long-term illness. The SAS campaign has already had a considerable impact on the whole sewage debate and the UK has now started to clean up its act in reducing the amount of sewage pollution. SAS have become respected eco-campaigners and are now putting skills learnt to good use in campaigning vigorously on a broader range of water issues. Current campaigns include 'Sewage and Sickness', 'Safer Shipping' and 'No To Toxics'. See more here Given that I'm swimming in water from the Thames, I hope you agree that this is also a cause worth supporting. Macmillan provide great support to people and families affected by cancer. The Macmillan nurse was a great help to both my parents as Mum fought against cancer - it's clear that it's not just the person with the disease that needs support. I'm completely gutted that a friend has been diagnosed with cancer after giving birth to her first child. I'm now doing this swim, and hopefully raising money for this great cause, as a way of sending positive thoughts as she goes through her treatment. You can reach my Macmillan page here.* Charities pay a small fee for our service. Find out how much it is and what we do for it.
