In 2008 I was fortunate enough to serve briefly with The 2nd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment (2PARA), in Afghanistan during 16 Air Assault Brigade’s tour in Helmand Province (the battalion is due to deploy to Afghanistan, for another six month tour, later this year).
My attachment was a fascinating, challenging and incredibly rewarding experience. I had never worked with soldiers from the Parachute Regiment before and I have no doubt that none of them had been commanded by a Cavalry Officer - so it was a new encounter for us all and one that I will never forget. Each and every day I was constantly amazed at the courage, professionalism and selflessness of the soldiers – it was genuinely humbling.
Our Company Group was based in Forward Operating Base Robinson, just south of Sangin. We were extremely lucky not to loose anyone during my stint in command but this, very sadly, was not the case for the other elements of the Battalion. During the Battalion’s six month tour 11 soldiers were killed in action and many more were seriously injured.
The Parachute Regiment Charity provides vital support to injured soldiers and bereaved families of the Airborne Forces as well as funding activities which enhance the well-being of serving and retired soldiers of the Parachute Regiment, associated units and youth organisations. The charity is an amalgamation the Parachute Regiment Central Fund and Airborne Forces Charities. It was set up this year and its work load is increasing all too quickly. If you can spare a moment please make a donation. The people this charity supports are truly awe-inspiring, be they soldiers or their families.
Many thanks for your support.
