Story

Some of you may already know, but Wongun passed away on Friday 29th October 2010.

Thank you to those who have donated already via this site, and a huge thankyou in advance to those who will continute to donate. I can't say enough how important it is to keep investing in research so that, not only can treatments get better for anyone suffering from blood conditions but also that one day there will be a cure.

Wongun was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia in March 2009.  It was a shocking diagnosis as he was young and fit, and a complete gym fanatic. However because he was young and fit so the prognosis was optimistic.  He underwent 4 rounds of intensive chemotherapy treatment over the course of 5 months, which eventually put him into remission in September 2009. Unfortunately he relapsed in December and underwent a further 2 rounds of chemo, again puting him into remission. But his fight with AML continued and he relapsed in June this year. As he had now relapsed twice in the space of a year, and the fact that his cancer was extremely aggressive, meant he was given a prognosis of a further 3-6 months to live.  Since July 2010 Wongun had been at home with his partner Salema, and enjoying each day as much as he could.

“When Wongun was first diagnosed with Leukaemia, I didn’t really know what it was. I thought only babies or old people got this, not a healthy 25 year old. But since that day, Wongun has fought so hard to win his battle against this awful disease and despite his inspiring strength the cancer simply took his body away from him. I can’t imagine life without him, and I never thought this would happen to us – but it did. The more we can understand this disease, the more we can offer sufferers a chance of long term survival. Please be part of that – for Wongun. Thankyou.”
