Story

Hello!

My name is Zaynab and I am turning eight years old this May. For my birthday, I am raising some funds to protect and conserve the great Amazon rainforest. I am passionate about the environment and would like to use this occasion to reach out to the great lungs of our planet. We need the rainforests and they are in danger so please help me protect it!

I am supporting the Amazon Rainforest and its indigenous peoples via the Rainforest Foundation UK.

The Rainforest Foundation UK have been working at the Andean Amazon rainforest since 1998. They support real-time community-based monitoring as a tool that connects local people with national law enforcement in an effort to stop illegal logging and deforestation.

They also support sustainable livelihoods via a project that helps indigenous Asháninka families in the Peruvian Amazon to generate sustainable income through the production of environmentally-friendly crops like cocoa.

Some other fun facts about the Andean Amazon rainforest in Peru:

  • Peru sits in the Andean Amazon, a region that faces enormous threats to its ecological integrity, as well as to its traditional inhabitants, mostly vulnerable indigenous peoples.
  • Forest conversion and fragmentation, mainly by agriculture and cattle ranching, is boosted by the continued expansion of the road network. Forest degradation and deforestation is driven by illegal logging and mining, as well as unsustainable forest product harvesting. Water contamination and hydrological alteration occurs in river basins affected by mega dams and extractive industries such as oil.
  • The Madre de Dios region in the southern Peruvian Amazon is one of the most biodiverse regions in the world, but now has more than 3,000 mining concessions in operation. In total, 34% of the Peruvian Amazon is covered in oil and gas concessions – this includes concessions allocated over titled land and protected areas.
