EPILEPSEY AWARENESS A WALK FOR CARLY

We will be raising funds for the Mersey Regional Epilepsy Association (MREA) http://www.epilepsymersey.org.uk and Neurosupport in Anne Milsom’s memory. Joe Paton, family and friends will be walking on both days so thank for your support.

2013 in this now annual event, the challenge will be a walk up Snowdon and back on Sunday 11 August again with an early start around 6.00am to start the walk!! We will be back in Merseyside around 8.00pm. Joe Paton has also said he also wants to walk along with family and friends on the anniversary as well on Tuesday 20 August, repeating his journey that he made in 2011 walking from Southport Hospital to The Walton Centre, a walk of around 17 miles when he raised money for the brain tumour support group.

 Our walk will feature that supermarket favourite BOGOF, yes 2 walks for the price of one. A Walk for Carly is a joint event between MREA and Neurosupport to raise awareness around neurological conditions especially epilepsy.

My name is Carly Milsom In my late teens I was diagnosed with epilepsy and until then I had worked as a travel agent for 2 years and was just about to start new job as cabin crew a “trolley dolly”, for Virgin Airlines on long haul flights to Hong Kong and San Francisco The diagnosis meant I would have to leave my new dream job even though I hadn’t even started. . Over the next few years lots of seizures brought on by my epilepsy began to overshadow my life, they had left me embarrassed and terrified, until in 2002 when I met Dr Varma at the Walton centre.

Dr Varma and his team found out which part of my brain where causing the seizures and that I could have brain surgery. I was so pleased and was not scared about the operation as I would benefit from the surgery. The operation could not guarantee that it would stop the seizures totally, but it could help me live a more normal life. I still have seizures but not as many, they usually occur when I’m not sleeping very well or worrying about things. For the last 7 years I have worked in the Walton centre as a volunteer as a thank you to Dr Varma and his team. I really enjoy being there and helping staff and patients, which is where I met Joe Paton who agreed to do this walk.

My constant companion on all these visits to hospital and during the operation and afterwards was my mum Anne; the reason for the walk on 20 August is it’s the 2nd anniversary of her death.
