I've decided to fund raise for Meningitis Research Foundation because a friend of mine contracted the disease at University in 2003.  As a consequence he lost most of his hearing and if it wasn't for the Meningitis Research Foundation he may not have been alive today.   Meningitis Research Foundation funds research to prevent meningitis and septicaemia and to improve survival rates and outcomes.  

Meningitis is an inflammation of the membrane that surrounds the brain and spinal chord which can kill in hours.   The infection can be caused by a variety of bacteria, viruses and other pathogens.   It can be transmitted through kissing or close contact with a carrier of the bacteria.  However, it is still unknown why some people get ill from the germs because it is harmless to most of us.  So, many do make a full recovery.  But for those that don't, they can suffer permanent life changing after effects such as memory loss, headaches, deafness, learning difficulties, epilepsy, paralysis, speech problems and loss of sight.
