SP. 1st December. - I completed the route yesterday (65 miles) in 6 hours. It was the coldest November day since 1985 and the last 8 miles were completed in darkness. It's not too late to donate!!!
My name is Alex Chisholm. I'm 51 years old ,separated, with a son and daughter, grandson and grandaughter. I was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer last September. I've since had chemo then radiotherapy. My treatment finished mid January '08 and hospital appointments have just been pushed out to every two months. I am a non-smoker!!
I'll be cycling from the West Coast to East Coast of Scotland on Sunday November 30th to promote LUNG CANCER AWARENESS and raise money for the Roy Castle Foundation.
I got back on my bike during treatment and went from only being able to do 3 miles along flat canal to getting back up the mountains doing the same routes as before being diagnosed, just a little bit slower on big climbs but not much!! Distance bike runs came with just getting out and doing it. I really missed it. I used to do 5500 miles and more a year on mountain bike and in August this year clocked up my 1000 miles since getting back on bike and still going strong. These are mountain bike miles - the rule is to multiply by 3 to get road miles equivalent (that's what I read in a biking magazine).
My route will follow the Forth and Clyde Canal from Bowling to the Falkirk Wheel where it joins the Union Canal and on to Edinburgh Quays where it joins the Firth of Forth. That's 60 miles. I hope to do this in 5 hours cycling time and I'll be able to get this info from my bike computer (anorak alert!!).
I'll be supported, cheered, refreshed and generally encouraged by fellow members of the Glasgow Lung Cancer Patient Group, some local staff from the Roy Castle Foundation - and many more no doubt. Some are even thinking about cycling all or part of the route with me.
At this time, I would like to thank all for their help and support during my fight back to here. Thank you.
Why don't you join me and raise some money to help fight Lung Cancer. Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
