Story
So, in November, I'm heading to Kenya with the charity Moving Mountains to assist with the renovation of Nanyuki Street Children's Home. In addition, we will be taking a group from an orphanage in Siaya to Malindi for their first ever seaside holiday! Understandably, none of the children can swim and will need constant, and very close, supervision in order to get the very most from their first experience of the sea. Now, here lies the problem ...
My # 1 fear: As with several of the children, being in water out of my depth and not being able to hold onto the side or have access a lifejacket (and # 2 fear - being seen in public in a swimming costume!).
My current ability (or lack of!) in the water: In any one go, I'm able to swim 1 length of the local pool using a combination of uncoordinated breaststroke and doggy paddle! I remain unable to jump in from the side, dive or sit confidently on a lilo!
My aim: To undergo lessons to coordinate the breaststroke, to swim multiple times a week and to build up to swimming 50 lengths of Hackney's finest bath by October 31st.
What am I asking from you? To give a little or a lot towards a fantastic cause, whether this be sponsoring the whole effort or an amount per length in the final showdown (I WILL reach the 50 by hook or by crook, even if I take an exhausting, shrivelled and prune like 12 hours to acheive it!).
Whilst helping me to fundraise for the materials and resources we need to make this trip possible (every penny you donate is for this project - NOT to cover my costs!), you'll also be ensuring that I continue to face my biggest fear, therefore enabling me to supervise and support the children safely.
Thanks so much in advance!
A rather terrified Amy! x
