Story

Thank you for visiting our fundraising page.

Our niece Amy, a cystic fibrosis sufferer, died on 20th December 2006, aged just 23. In her memory, and in the hope of raising money for the CF Trust to help in their search for a cure, Sue and I, with our nephew Charlie, will be walking from our front door in York to Amy's front door in the Wirral.  Jackie (Sue's sister & Charlie's Mum) will be our support act, ferrying the baggage from place to place each day.

The walk will start on 8th September and end on 21st September. The Transpennine Trail will take us down to Selby then across to Stockport. From there a short section of the Midshires Way takes us to the towpath of the Peak Forest Canal and on to Disley. From Disley to Hooton we follow the North Cheshire Way, ending the walk via the Wirral Way from Hooton to West Kirby. In total, the distance is 193 miles.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to donate: Cystic Fibrosis Trust will receive your money electronically and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in Gift Aid will be added to your donation at no cost to you.

Please donate generously.

Many thanks for your support.

Alan, Sue and Charlie

UPDATE!

Monday 10th September : 11.50am  - About 5 miles into the third day and 34 miles into the walk as a whole. No problems except sore feet. WARNING - don't stay at the Londesborough Arms at Selby - in fact give Selby a wide berth if possible!.

Tuesday 11th September :20.30 - End of day four. 60 miles completed. Walked extra miles because of washed away footpaths and bridges due to flooding. All happy and still no blisters!

Thursday 13th evening: We crossed the Pennines today and will reach the half way point in Stockport tomorrow. In half an hour or so we are off to the excellent Peels Arms in Padfield. Great food and Theakstons best bitter. ( B+B also available)

Monday 17th September: 11.08 : We reached Alderley Edge last night at the end of day nine. No problems except a small blister. We had a surprise visit on arriving yesterday evening from Amy's dad and grandma, with whom we shared a couple of pints in the nearest pub. We are on our way to Knutsford today. All going well.

Wednesday 19th September: We have finished day twelve and have only two days and less than 30 miles to go. Highlights of the past few days - a heron , a parrot on a barge who said "hello" to us,  the pub with no name in Knutsford. And today we saw a rainbow. Expect a longer 'end of walk' message over the weekend.

Saturday 22nd September 11:44: Our last day was marred by a 2-hour downpour, but we finally arrived here at Amy's parents' house at around 16:00 yesterday. There was a welcoming committee including the local CFT rep, Beverley, and the local MP, Stephen Hesford. He'll try to get us some coverage in the local press, which might bring in a few more donations.

The walk as a whole was not picturesque, being largely on roads and cycle tracks. We did see quite a bit of wildlife, but unfortunately most of it was squashed. For me, the high points were the Peak Forest Canal and the heron we saw on its banks, the fantastic welcome we received in the Peels Arms in Padfield, and the Pub With No Name in Knutsford. My vote for the best pint goes to the Timothy Taylor's Landlord in The Greyhound at Riccall, just 10 miles or so out of York. Charlie contends for the Marstons Pedigree at the New Soldier Dick near Disley, which I didn't sample.

We couldn't have completed the walk at all without the support of Jacky, who ferried us and our baggage and managed to find us in some very out-of-the-way places at the end of each day's walk. She also supplied us with delicious and varied packed lunches. I also need to mention Charlie's map-reading skills, without which Sue and I would probably still be wandering around in circles somewhere in mid-Cheshire!

More than anything else, the support we've had from everyone who has donated to our fund has been what has kept us going for the past two weeks. We'd all like to say a big thank you again to you all - and don't forget, this page is open until December!

Cheers!

Alan
