Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.
So many people will now be bored of my "my leg hurts like hell when running" story this year I will tell a different one.
This will be my second Great South Run now and let me just explain what headway means to me.
27th November 2000 walking home from work I was struck by a van and severely injured.
With bones sticking through my skin and a head the size of a watermelon I didn't look a pretty sight.
After 9 days in a coma I awoke to find that i had a son, a long term girlfriend (now my wife), aches, pains, scars the size of shark attacks and a catheter shoved up my pee hole.
Whilst in hospital I was told I would never run again (why couldn't they have just said knit) or work again, and because I was so poorly I didn't care, I was still seeing stars float around my head...
When I left hospital I was told of a nearby group called headway, for brain damaged/injured people,
"Thats not me, im fine" I thought, thats denial. Well eventually, after many seizures, much forgetfullness, and tiredness to the point that I would sleep while talking and blatent unacceptable behaviour I realised that actually I am in need of help.
When I first joined headway it was run out of one small room and had very little funding.
The government give no money to them, they taught me about my brain injury and gave me back a little bit of the confidence I lost.
Through them I gained nessesary skills in maths and english at a time when all I knew was how to swear, they taught me computer skills when all I knew was how to shout at one.
I loved, and still do love the fact that I can be myself, my brain injured self, with others the same as me, but at the same time so different from me.
Now headway is larger, much larger, but still has a huge funding/money problem and with your help I am trying to do my bit to give to others the help that I recieved.
Many of the service users at headway will never work again, or run again or even knit again.
I have been a lucky one, I have been able to overcome alot of my problems, NOT ALL, and so as I run for headway as my charity I run for all people less fortunate and unable to run.
Please donate if you can, every penny counts.
On a lighter note if you are the highest bidder, adding each week counts, you will win a prize or selection of prizes which will of course include a signed pair of my running pants and some running apparel, shoes ect.
