Please support me on my expedition to the Arctic for Molly’s Fund, a special fund, dedicated to creating the first ever specialist brain cancer unit in the UK.

Molly’s Fund

What is the worst thing that you can imagine? For Oliver and Hatty Lane Fox hearing the diagnosis of brain cancer for their four year old daughter Molly was unimaginable. Unthinkable. Unbearable.

On 10th December 2007, Molly was diagnosed with a Diffuse Pontine Glioma, which needs a million cells to be visible, and once you can see it, it’s too late. All Oliver and Hatty could do was ensure that Molly received the best possible medical and palliative care.  They found, however, to their frustration, that specialists all operated out of different hospitals, creating no consistency in approach to care.

The truth is that brain cancer in the UK is woefully under funded and under researched.  There is no one dedicated unit for the disease in the UK.  Yet each year 5,000 people are diagnosed with primary brain cancers, while 60,000 others develop secondary brain tumours.  It affects all ages, and survival rates are lower than any other cancer.

Oliver and Hatty, with the help of the National Hospital Development Foundation, have set up a fund in memory of Molly to create a specialist Brain Tumour Unit at The National Hospital in London.

The Brain Tumour Unit project began in 2008 and so far £1.5 million has been raised. Molly's Fund was established to raise the final £1 million needed to complete the project. The money will be used to refurbish and equip the 12-bed Brain Tumour Ward as well as providing the initial funding needed for a dedicated palliative care specialist and nurse, to help with end of life care.

My Arctic Expedition to Spitsbergen

Spitsbergen, which means jagged peaks, is a breathtakingly beautiful Norwegian Island situated high in the Arctic Ocean. The expedition will take place over 3 weeks, and I will face temperamental weather and frozen terrain. It is the wilderness. The temperature will be around -25.  I will ski traverse pulling my sledge for 160kms, crossing mountains and glaciers and camping on the ice.

Please help me honour Molly’s memory, and transform the diagnosis, treatment and quality of life for thousands of people with brain cancer, by supporting me in my Arctic expedition.

Thank you in advance

Love

Hector
