Our lovely son, Lucas, was born in June 2008 and has Down's syndrome. 

Down syndrome is the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome.

Down's syndrome is a life-long condition that causes delays in learning and development that cannot be cured. Like any other child, our babies vary in their abilities and achievements. The problems can be eased with the right help and a positive and accepting attitude to Down's syndrome.

To help Lucas we take him to Downright Excellent on a weekly basis.

Downright Excellent provides educational sessions and quality play experiences for children with Down’s syndrome and their siblings, plus education and support for parents/ carers. We currently run weekly speech and language classes, and life skills and sensory processing sessions for children age 0-4 (Early Intervention), and 5-9 (Supplementary Education). The 10-14 age group is planned for 2013. We follow the teaching programme of Down Syndrome Education International, who regularly visit and evaluate our group, in order to maintain our excellence based on their cutting edge research.

£200, can provide a morning of speech and language education from a professional

£150, can provide expenses for 3 volunteers (e.g. cost of tube fares to and from group) for a term

£70, can provide a set of publications from Down Syndrome Education International for parents to borrow and return

£40, can provide a numicon set, to assist the children with mathematical reasoning

£30, can provide a weighted lap pad to assist sitting for a child with sensory processing issues

£20 can provide a 'something special' DVD to help a child learn Makaton sign language

£10 can provide a chewy tube for one child with sensory processing issues
