Story

The trek from west coast to east is finally over.

Day 1

Workington to Greystoke - 43 miles.  We packed up the bikes and set off from Teesside at 7.30am for a 10.00am start from Workington.  The sun was shining and we had an easy ride through Cockermouth (dodging the dog dirt) and then a steady climb before decending into Keswick. We stopped off at the Kings Arms for some refreshment and an unwise decision by myself to have one for the road. After a few miles on the old Keswick railway it was all uphill to Greystoke. We rested our weary legs at the Boot & Shoe with a pint and a lamb shank.

Day 2

Greystoke to Rookhope - 47 miles.  Started off the day with a smashing full english breakfast at our B&B.  A steady ride into Penrith to start with followed by some serious climbs.  Danny found a new lease of life after having his tyres pumped, racing away up all the hills.  The 5 mile climb upto Hartside Cafe sorted the men out from the boys.  Stopped at the cafe for lunch and the rest of the afternoon consisted of steep decents (which didn't last long enough) followed by steeper climbs.  The weather wasn't to kind either. Lots of wind and lots of rain.  We eventually trundled into Rookhope and stayed at the Rookhope Inn.  Thankfully they had a good food, real ale and a tumble dryer.

Day 3

Rookhope to Sunderland - 48 miles.  A big off-road climb out of Rookhope then across the Pennines against driving wind and rain. Then it was all down hill through Consett then onto Sunderland - the last 10 miles being the most eventful with 2 punctures a broken chain and Danny eating dirt after a nasty fall.  Then it was a quick dip in the sea for our bikes before the photo shoot.

A big thank you to Dave Redpath and Karl Pogson who helped with transport of the bikes.

Also a special thank you goes out to Mick Emerson who supported us all the way in his trusty Freelander.

Congratulations to Daniel John who on 20th June won his second MMA bout on Battlefield 13 at Marton Country Club.  Not only did the six weeks of hard training pay off in Daniel getting his win he also managed to raise £120 taking a collection bucket around after the fight.  Daniel would like to thank Battleground promoter Cliff Pollard for allowing the collection and also everyone who donated generously.

I have witnessed first hand what a wonderful place the Butterwick Hospice is in Stockton-on-Tees.  Each staff member were not only patient and caring but also gave more than could ever have been expected.  The nurses were extremely thoughtful towards all the family, giving us comfort and peace of mind.

In loving memory of Sheila Wild

What we are doing

The Sea to Sea (C2C) is a cycle route which starts in Workington in West Cumbria, travels through the northern Lake District and heads into Keswick before passing through Penrith and the Eden Valley. It then starts the climb up to Hartside and onto the Northern Pennines - the roof of England. There then follows an undulating ride as the C2C meanders through old lead mining villages, such as Nenthead and Rookhope, and down into the Durham Dales before entering Consett. From here it's a ride to the North Sea and Sunderland.

147 Miles in total

Riders Mark Emerson, Daniel John, Barry Manning, Marty Stokes,   Dylan Umpleby
