Elephants, in my opinion, are one of the most magnificent creatures to walk this planet. I have created this page for my Mum's birthday as she likes gifts that are not a gift for her (if that makes sense) and also loves elephants as much as I do. Apparently, when asked what she wanted to be when she grew up Carolynne replied "An elephant" so I figured this was a way for people to give Carolynne a gift she really appreciates. Below are the reasons I think this animal is so fabulous and I'm sure there are many things I still have to learn.....

Elephants are the largest land animals alive today with an African male weighing in at 5 tons, their brain is also the largest of any land animals weighing in at 5kg. They have a highly convoluted neocortex (along with humans and dolphins) which is thought to be a sign of complex intelligence. The average elephant will drink 200 litres opf water a day and requires 100-200kg of plant matter everyday. An elephant can smell water from 3 miles away which is handy when you need 200 litres of the stuff.

Elephants carry their babies for neary 2 years and honour their dead in a similar way to humans.... revsiting the sites of dead matriarchs each year sometimes on the same date. Many humans are killed by a stampeding herd that has returned to the site of death as they try to steal the ivory from a dead elephant. Due to the large value of ivory on the black market and clashes between elephants and humans over living space, this species is under increasing threat from extinction and require protection from humans instead of persecution. Your money will go towards the protection of this species and its continued peaceful existence alongside humans.

below is the information shown on the charities page:

The Asian elephant is a truly magnificent creature. But sadly it’s on the brink of extinction, marooned in ever-decreasing pockets of forest by the spread of human settlements, farming, mining and railways.

In the past 100 years, the elephant population in Asia has shrunk by 90%. In another 30 years, it could easily vanish altogether.

So please join us to turn this around and save the Asian elephant. We’re the only charity in the UK that’s dedicated solely to this cause – and we rely on the efforts of our entire family network to help us succeed.

Massive habitat loss over the past 100 years has wiped out 50% of Asia's wild elephant population, along with the vital ecosystems they used to support. Elephant Family exists to save this iconic animal from extinction by securing vital habitat and reducing conflict with local communities.
