Bruce is retiring for a well earned rest after being with SODC for over 16 years. His last working day in the office will be Thursday 12 February.
Bruce has said that he hopes he is not being presumptuous but should a collection be arranged to "celebrate" his departure, he would be greatly honoured if, rather than receiving something for himself, that a donation be given instead to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) specifically for relief in the Congo.
Bruce said "We all have so many material benefits in this country whilst others elsewhere in the world struggle to live on a daily basis. Sadly many do not even achieve this for the lack of the most basic of essentials."
You can find more details about the situation in the Congo on the DEC web site at www.dec.org.uk
Since August 2008 over 250,000 people have fled the fighting between the government troops and the rebels and this in a region where there are already over one million people with no food, no water, no shelter and no healthcare.
They need our help.
Agencies have been working in the area for many years and are confident that they can get help through to those who need it. £30 will provide the absolute basic needs to help a frightened child, £100 will provide clean drinking water for 5,000 people.
