Story

Take on Cavell’s Purple Walk - Wednesday 6 May 2026

Do it for Donna.

Midwife Donna has spent her career supporting families through some of the most important moments of their lives. But when her own family faced heartbreak, she didn’t know where to turn.

Donna’s ex-husband, the father of her four children, was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. He was given just months to live.

“I knew how important it was for the children to spend time with their dad before he passed away,” Donna says. He lived 180 miles away. Donna doesn’t drive. Every visit meant a 180-mile round trip by train — five tickets, every time. While managing the household budget alone, the cost quickly became overwhelming.

Imagine having to choose between keeping everything afloat at home… and giving your children precious final memories with their dad.

I started to struggle with the costs... But I didn’t want money to be the reason my children missed out on time with him.

That’s when Donna reached out to Cavell. Thanks to the generosity of supporters, Cavell was able to provide a grant to cover the travel costs.

Because of the support, all four children were able to travel to see their father the day before he died. They were able to spend that precious time together and say their goodbyes. Those memories will stay with them for the rest of their lives.

Nurses and midwives spend their lives caring for others. But when crisis hits they can find themselves facing it alone. Cavell makes sure they don’t have to.

Now it’s your turn to step forward.

On Wednesday 6 May 2026, take on Cavell’s Purple Walk and walk in solidarity with nurses and midwives like Donna. Nurses can clock-up 15,000 steps during the course of a busy 12-hour shift, ensuring their patients receive the care they need. We are inviting you to walk a day in a nurse’s footsteps and raise money to support them.

Get together wherever you are with colleagues, friends and family on Wednesday 6th May and step up for nurses and midwives! Complete 15,000 steps, wear purple and raise money to support nurses and midwives facing a crisis.
