Story
Thalassaemia is an inherited life threatening and life limiting blood disorder which affects haemoglobin in the blood, required to carry oxygen. Over the past year we have been funding a nurse at Kanti Children's Hospital to provide care for the children affected by this condition and we would like to continue this support.
The objectives of the Thalassaemia project include:
- To help ensure safe and timely blood transfusions to affected children under 14, to ensure regular follow-up and monitoring of transfusion dependent children and enable the provision of iron chelation and other medicines by the hospital.
- To relieve economic and social hardship on low income families requiring lifelong blood support for their children.
If the project is successful the outcomes would include:
- Improved health and energy levels among children, enabling regular school attendance to many.
- Reduced financial and social pressure on families, many of whom are from marginalized communities.
- Strengthened hospital support system for managing Thalassaemia cases.
- Increased awareness among caregivers regarding regular transfusion schedules.
