Story

Barney Webber was a much-loved, kind and likeable character who joined Taunton in the Nursery and went right through the school, leaving the Upper Sixth in 2022. Barney’s tragic death in June 2023 continues to have an impact on the school community and we have received numerous requests to create a fitting tribute at the school.

Following the wishes of Barney’s family, Emma, Dave and Charlie Webber, we have decided to commemorate Barney’s life with the refurbishment of the School’s Memorial Cricket Pavilion. Alongside the renovation the building will be renamed ‘The Webber Pavilion’ in Barney’s honour.

“It is a great honour to have the pavilion named after Barney. Barney spent 16 glorious years at Taunton School. From his first day in ‘First Steps One’ through to Year 13 in his beloved Marshall, he loved (almost) every single moment. There isn’t a part of Taunton School that doesn’t echo for us with memories of him, but the cricket pavilion was especially important. It's where he enjoyed countless hours and we will always picture our beautiful son there. We are so proud of all that he achieved during his time and also for the legacy he leaves. The whole school community has become a huge source of support to us all, and in particular for his brother Charlie. We cannot express in words the enormity of the grief we feel at the loss of Barney; but we are determined to let his light shine on”. Emma and Dave Webber

Barney was a keen cricketer and his parents have spoken about how much he enjoyed his time playing cricket on the Front or watching and celebrating with his friends and teammates in the pavilion. Alongside Barney, the pavilion will continue to also remember those who died in the First and Second World Wars as well as pupils, such as Fidel Fahnbulleh, who passed away either at school or soon after leaving.

We hope this important building will continue to be a symbol of cricket and the values that it represents, alongside the important values Barney held dear, notably those of kindness, inclusion and enjoyment of life.

Our goal is to raise £40,000, the entirety of which will be used to refurbish the pavilion, creating a fitting tribute to Barney and the other OTs who are no longer with us. Any additional funds raised beyond our target will be donated to the Barnaby Webber Foundation. An organisation set up by the Webbers to support grassroots cricket clubs by providing essential equipment and items necessary to encourage young boys and girls to engage in the sport. Furthermore, the Foundation aims to offer support to young people aged 18 and under facing difficult life challenges.

How You Can Help

Your donations will allow us to create this lasting tribute to Barney. Alongside the areas remembering those no longer with us, we intend to create a space in the building to publicly name and thank all the donors to the project, explicitly those who contribute £250 or more.

I hope you will consider joining Emma, Dave, Charlie and the school community in celebrating Barney's life and supporting this project, ensuring the legacy of those no longer with us live on in the joy and camaraderie of school cricket.
