17/08/06 1100 hrs: UPDATE : WE DID IT!!!
On Tuesday 15th August at 1451hrs BST after a total of 11 hours and 59 minutes and approximately 33 miles covered, in a Force 4 wind with a rather large swell Vicky Whittle made landfall on a beach just east of the town of Wissant in Wissant Bay, France.
On the trip we saw one seal, 2 porpoise, lots of ships and boats of assorted shapes and sizes, some seaweed, a few bits of plastic, but more importantly definitely no jellyfish, sewage or sharks!
Thank you so much to all of you who have donated so genorously and supported us in other ways through this whole event.
We are a team of 6 friends from Newcastle-upon-Tyne (two of whom now relocated to London). We are all competitive swimmers of varying degrees and in a minute of madness decided to use our swimming skills to attempt to swim the English Channel. We have chosen the following well deserving local charity to benefit from our efforts.
St Oswalds Hospice, Gosforth.
St Oswald’s is a purpose-built hospice in Gosforth providing care for adults and children in north east England. It follows a holistic approach that aims to address not just physical symptoms, but also spiritual and emotional needs too. It offers specialist short breaks to children with progressive, life shortening conditions and provides specialist care for children, as well as support and advice for parents, within a relaxed,
home-from-home environment.
