Story
KPM - Kilometre per Man
About the Event
I am doing an indoor cycle ride at my local gym, the distance is based on the number of our service men and women who have paid the ultimate price. Since January 2002 to date a total of 293 lives have been lost in action in Afghanistan and Iraq and in memory of each of those I will cycle 1 kilometre.
Therefore the total as at time of writing will be when converted to miles 182, I am aiming to do this in a single day!!
To give you some idea how far I will be going:-
Complete lap of the M25 = 117 miles
London to Cardiff = 132 miles
London to Leeds = 170 miles
London to Liverpool = 178 miles
Personal Story and inspiration - For those of you that don't know me well
A former Royal Engineer I served for 17 years, during my time with the Sappers I broke my back in the early eighties and had surgery back in 1990, since then I have suffered back pain pretty much every day. Then in September 2006 it completely gave up the ghost and so in January of last year I underwent more major surgery and had a complete spinal fusion of L4,L5,S1 (lower back) with a titanium cage fitted, after 9+ hours in theatre and some complications I awoke to find I was paralysed on my right side from the waist down.
I spent nearly 2 days in ICU, and slowly started to get some mobility back over the following weeks and months. Since then I have had some fantastic support by some brilliant physiotherapists and other medical professionals. I am now mobile and I am able to cycle quite well indoors and a wee bit out on the road! - So the challenge is on for January.
Please help me if you can and please be generous.
