The woman in this picture is using a treadle pump that she purchased for less than £10 to double her family income. IDE-UK made that possible by designing this low cost technology and creating a supply chain to bring it to market. May sound complicated, but...

Did you know that 95% of all products are designed for the wealthy 5% of the population? What that means is that if it weren't for the work of IDE-UK, technologies like this treadle pump would probably not be available.  IDE works to design products that can be made in the developing world for a reasonable price. It then works through partnerships with local manufacturers, distributors and retail stores to set up a sustainable supply chains and product promotion so that those currently trapped in poverty can afford to buy these technologies.

  

IDE-UK is not driven by profit and can therefore design and market technologies at very low cost. The added bonus is that IDE's work helps to strength the whole economy because not only are the farmers increasing their income but so are the people that make the pumps, the people that transport them to market and the shop keepers that sell them etc.

 This is not simply throwing money at a problem but seeking to make a sustainable and progressive change.  With IDE-UK small donations can make big differences and quickly add up to material improvements in welfare.

 The Etape du Tour is a stage of the Tour De France open to the general public. Each year around 8500 people from all over the world take part. The event this year involves cycling 198 kilometres through the Pyrenees including 5 mountain climbs, one of which is 19km long!
