Cowes week rowathon · 1 July 2008

For many young people simply picking up where they left off before their diagnosis isn’t possible. The Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust is a national charity that supports young people aged 8-24 to rebuild their confidence after cancer through sailing and outdoor adventure trips.

Story

Hi here is the information for the Cowes week rowathon:

Ellen Macarthur Trust to use oar power

During Skandia Cowes Week (2 - 9 August) the Ellen MacArthur Trust will be using oar power to make a difference to children coping with serious illnesses. The Trust, whose patrons are Dame Ellen Macarthur and double Olympic gold medallist Shirley Robertson OBE, takes young people aged between 8-18 sailing to help them regain their confidence, on their way to recovery from cancer & leukaemia.

During the Week, the Trust will be using two Concept2 Rowing Machines to reach a challenge of two million metres! The challenge will be open to the public, and there are likely to be plenty of high-profile sailors keen to contribute too. However, the most extraordinary rowers will be the children from the Trust who will be helping towards covering this epic distance.

The challenge has been set up by members of Coalporters rowing club and Southampton Solent University Boat Club. The attempt is being lead by Gus Mckechnie of Coalporters who has set his own personal challenge of reaching 5,505km by the end of Skandia Cowes Week .‘Having experienced the loss of my mother to cancer in 2007, I can fully appreciate the importance of helping others to be inspired to fight the disease’

Gus is attempting a number of different endurance events raising money for several charities. These events have been brought together under the banner - the Bombay Duck Challenge - with the Trust being one of the beneficiaries. The end of the ‘Rowathon’ will coincide with the start of the Olympic rowing regatta in Bejing. The Concept 2 rowing machine is an important part of not only the rowers training but that of Skandia team GBR sailors as well. Concept 2 is a partner of the GB squad.
