Story
A s a 17 year old lad, i was involved in a fatal road crash. This not only changed my life forever but changed many others too. I took the decision to try and make a positive impact on others by sharing my story.
I contacted South Yorkshire Police in early 2000 offering my services . I was contacted by a road traffic officer called Kevin Bennett who spoke to me regarding my ordeal. It was a very emotional conversation for both parties. Kevin told me about many road deaths he had attended as a serving officer and how many involved young drivers. He went on to say that 17 to 23 year old's make up to 20% of the driving population but are also involved in over 70% of UK road deaths.
I was then put on to a lady at South Yorkshire Fire service who was looking at setting a young driver presentation up for young driver aged 17 to 23 year old. I became involved with South Yorkshire's RTC (Road Traffic Road Show) which ran for several years. This was a multi agency event with South Yorkshire Ambulance, Police and Fire safety. This saw me on stage presenting my hard hitting story to the young audience. I later joined a project called Drive For Life which was ran by Rotherham Council as well as the Emergency services. I was involved with this project for over four years. I was then approached by Devon and Cornwall Fire Service to tell my story at their Road Safety events. This saw me travel down south for a four year period delivering my story as part of the road safety team.
I set up a non for profit company in early 2010 delivering road safety to 17 to 24 year old's in schools and colleges. I delivered my story to Sheffield Wednesday, United, Rotherham and Barnsley football clubs young players.
It is estimated that i have talked to over 80,000 young adults in my time. All my time was given free. I have won numerous awards for my voluntary work and been on TV and did a show on radio 2 regarding my story.
2013 saw me go to University to which i trained a a ODP (Operating Department Practitioner) My road safety work took a little bit of a back seat while i trained for my current job. Now i'm settled in work, i'm looking to get back out up and down the country to carry on my road safety work.
I would like to raise £4000 to which would allow me to travel to events, hire venues, set up events and pay for expenses for other guest speakers for the next two years.
I hope you can support and follow me.
