    Story

Private George Henry Edwards. Regimental number 2970 (later 236001) of 1st Battalion Herefords was born in Hentland in 1893. He was the second of seven children born to Thomas and Annie Edwards and was baptised in St Catherine's church in Hoarwithy. He was a thrashing machine worker who lived at Red Rail.  Private Edwards died in Bristol on February 4th 1918 from chest wounds received in Palestine, aged 25 and is buried in St Catherine’s churchyard.

Sadly, some years ago the memorial headstone of our local hero was damaged and it has been slowly deteriorating since.

February 4th 2018 marks the Centenary of Pte Edwards' death. As a small gesture for the sacrifice Pte Edwards made for us all, his headstone has been repaired and once again sits proudly with his fallen friends in the beautiful churchyard of St Catherine's in Hoarwithy.

Any additional funds raised will be split equally between Royal British Legion and Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

A very big thank you to everyone who has so generously donated to the repair of George Edward's memorial headstone. As you can see, he now rests proudly with his fallen friends. The memorial service to commemorate the centenary of George's death on February 4th was lovely and very well attended.

My grandfather died as a result of WW2 - he joined the Australian Infantry Forces and was wounded at Gallipoli. Lovely to restore George Henry's Grave and have a commemoration service.
