In January 2015, I will volunteer for 3 months on a development programme in Bangladesh with VSO’s ICS Entrepreneur. VSO’s ICS entrepreneur programme aims to alleviate poverty by supporting rural entrepreneurs, emerging business and existing small businesses to develop and be sustainable. I will be working alongside volunteers from Bangladesh on a project that aims to develop and strengthen enterprises within the handloom sector. By sharing skills and working together with small businesses, we hope to secure a brighter future for those in our corner of rural Bangladesh by creating jobs, reducing poverty, providing skills, and contributing positively to social and economic development.  

International Citizen Service (ICS) is a programme that brings young people together to fight poverty and make a difference where it is needed most. ICS works with communities and projects that have specifically requested their help.  It also aims to inspire young people in the UK and overseas to become active global citizens who are passionate about long term community development. By the end of 2015, ICS aims to give a total of 14,000 young people from the UK and developing countries the opportunity to volunteer and fight poverty. The ICS Entrepreneur pilot will involve a further 800 young people, supporting economic development in poorer communities.

The ICS entrepreneur programme is part funded by the UK government’s Department for International Development (DFID). However, there is also a portion of funds that I need to fundraise in order to take part in the programme.

I need to raise £800 for Volunteer Service Overseas (VSO) who are one of the respected development charities that deliver ICS. The money I raise will go directly to VSO ICS and it will contribute to the ICS programme so that young people from the UK and overseas can volunteer like me on projects in the developing world to fight poverty and make a difference where it is needed most.

In order to reach my fundraising target, I will Live Below the Line for 5 days in December and challenge myself to live on £1 per day for 5 days to raise awareness of the 1.2 billion people who live below the poverty line every day.
