Story

Thanks for visiting my page, it's not just me running but also the other members of 'The Timperley Pavement Crackers' Andy Stein & Steve Brown, we sincerely hope that in between our injuries and dependencies on Curries, Stella and Hydes Smooth at least one of us can get round the course and raise some money for the Royal Marsden Hospital.

'Why' I can hear you saying are we running for The Royal Marsden Hospital in London. The reason is as follows;

In October 2006 a very good friend of mine Amanda Peake was diagnosed with a very rare form of leukemia, T Cell Prolymphacytic Leukemia (A very aggressive form of the disease like a Stealth Bomber that keeps coming back). Her local hospital had no experience of this (approximately 50 cases a year) so referred her to the Royal Marsden.

Ground breaking treatment was required to keep the disease at bay so new drugs were used until a donor (38 year old male) was identified for a stem cell transplant which was carried out in April 2007.

During recuperation in June 2007 Amanda contracted the CMV Virus, then Parvovirus which starting killing her red blood cells, blood transfusions every 2 weeks followed. She then contracted the EBV virus which required a drug called Rituximab which Warwick did not approve / fund (they have since changed their minds), With her virus at a critical level the Royal Marsden took the decision to 'hang the consequences' rather than wait for approval or not ! In December 2007 Amanda got the great news that she was clear of the virus.

Amanda is still not fully out of the woods but is well on the way with transfusions steadily getting further apart. If this Hospital can go out on a limb for our friend, then these ageing bodies can run thirteen miles in the Wilmslow Half Marathon on 30th March.

Any donation (with gift aid) is most gratefully appreciated and as the advert says 'Every little bit helps'.
