My story

Hello everyone and welcome to my Fundraising page.  You may know already that Ann and I are Foster Carers and this year we are raising funds for the Fostering Network, the UK's leading charity working to improve standards of care for fostered children.

The plan was for me to complete the Inca Trail in Peru during October 2008, climbing 12,000 feet, trekking through the Andes to Macchu Picchu and the aim was to raise over £4,000 to support the Fostering Network's work with fostered children and young people across the UK.

Well, I am pleased to say that the mission has been accomplished.  Seventeen foster carers, social workers and staff members of the Fostering Network embarked on the daunting high altitude trek and have already raised a massive £50,000 in sponsorship to help make a difference to vulnerable children and young people.  I've so far raised £4,600 for the charity.

The 10-day trek was an intense physical challenge, with steep, remote mountain trails climbing 4,200 metres into the snow-capped mountains, leading to the first sight of the legendary Lost City of the Incas, Machu Picchu.

I was very excited about the trip, facing new challenges and being able to complete my promise to all those who sponsored me.  I am proud to have been a part of raising so much money for the Fostering Network which will benefit children and young people in and out of the care system, as well as supporting foster carers in many different ways.

Phil Jacob, the Fostering Network’s funding and development manager, said: “I‘m delighted with the overwhelming enthusiasm for our first overseas fundraising venture, from both trekkers and sponsors.”

“The commitment and dedication of our adventurous members and staff have been phenomenal, and have helped us raise vital funds to continue our work with foster families, fostering services and policy makers to ensure the best possible foster care for the children who need it.”

There are 51,000 fostered children living with 43,000 foster families on any one day in the UK. The Fostering Network estimates there is a shortage of at least 10,000 foster families.

The Fostering Network is the UK’s leading charity for all those involved in fostering, and exists to ensure that fostered children receive the highest standards of care. It has offices in Belfast, Cardiff, Glasgow and London.
