We fund research and provide support to improve blood cancer patients' lives

Story

In August 2011, our daughter Jenna was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. Life hasn't been the same since.

Many, many years ago, Jenna would have probably died but today the scene is much different. Many, many more people, young and old are surviving this terrible disease, thanks to the research funded by Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research.

Up to now I've waxed my legs - and I've even released a whole album of instrumental music called 'Enemy in the Blood'. Now, my latest campaign is to get back on my bike and ride to raise money against that Enemy in the Blood.

I'm not doing this alone. A very good friend of mine, the ex-Olympic cycling champion Yvonne McGregor MBE will be riding with me over two days from Carlisle to Newcastle. I chose Carlisle as our starting point because there are many people that travel from Carlisle to the same hospital where Jenna is being treated in Newcastle to recieve treatment. It's a long way - particularly if you have to do it frequently.

It's going to be a little risky. Some 19 years ago, I seriously injured myself in cycling accident. I suffered knee and spine damage, the latter can have some pretty unpleasant side-effects and only surgery can really put it right again. The slightest lack of concentration, an unwanted blip of overpower could send my back into spasm and lock it up completely.

If this happens - ride over!

In light of this - some say I'm mad to even contemplate this. But when you've stared the Enemy in the face for yourself- it's personal. And you'll do whatever it takes to defeat it.

I am the weaker of us two cyclists...by an embarrassingly long margin. Yvonne is an Olympic champion, a medal winner in Sydney, world championship title holder and attaining the hour record are just only some of the things that this incredible lady has done. She could easily do the entire journey there and back in day - we're doing it in two to try and lessen the stress on my back!
