About our race. The Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race - its the longest non-stop canoe race in the world. All paddlers start in Devizes in Wiltshire and finish 125 miles later at Westminster Pier in central London. All 4 crews successfully completed the race on Easter Monday with Crew 2 coming in a very impressive 2nd place in the girls' k2 class!!
As we are raced with juniors (one of our crews is made up of two 15 year-old girls another a 15 year-old girl and a veteran female and the third a senior male) our crews, according to race rules, completed the race over 4 days beginning on Good Friday and arriving at Westminister on Easter Monday Morning.
It was the worst Easter weather in a very long time and harsh head winds, snow, ice and sleet forced nearly 60 crews, including more than 40 adult crews to retire. The last morning was so cold our brave support crews had to melt the pre-dawn ice from our rudders before we could complete the last 17 miles from Teddington to Westminster.
Each evening the girls braved snow, mud, winds and sleet to put up their tents, prepare their own meals and get ready for the next days paddle. We paddled continuously for between 6 1/2 and 7 hours each day.
As novices we've spend many nights and weekends this winter paddling the River Lea, the Regents and Hertford Union canals preparing for the race. Described by the organizers as the "canoeists Everest", This race is an enormous challenge for anyone - especially such young crews not yet 15 years old.
Please sponsor us - this site makes it not too difficult, and we'd really appreciate support for our Charity.
Many thanks for your support.
