Story

Progress:  http://hollowaybros.wordpress.com/

Hello.

On the 3rd/4th April 2010 we will be taking part in the Devizes to Westminster canoe race.

Who?

Alex & Steve Holloway - Steve being the younger (front of the boat - responsible for steering) and Alex the better looking (back of the boat - power house) (can you guess who wrote this section?).  Also being roped in for the essential and thankless task of support crewing are:  Jennie Holloway, Pat Holloway, Jude Holloway, Harriet Holloway (see a trend here), David Hagelthorn, Mel Page, John Page & Sam Page...

What?

We will be taking part in the 24 hour version of the Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race.  The Devizes to Westminster Canoe Race starts in Devizes, Wiltshire and finishes just downstream of Westminster Bridge in London, opposite the houses of parliament. The race has been held annually on Easter weekend since 1948. The race is 125 miles long and has 77 portages. The race is a severe test of skill and stamina. The non-stop version of the race is the longest non-stop canoe race in the world.

Current progress?

Alex sat in the boat for the first time over the summer (Steve is a slightly more seasoned kayaker), and after an initial bout of falling in (a lot), we are now relatively stable and progressing well enough.  We will add more detail later as to how preparation/training is going as we go along, and hopefully some pictures of us in preparation for the big day.

For regular updates, see http://hollowaybros.wordpress.com/.

While this little venture is one that the two of us have elected to do, we did not anticipate perhaps the time it would involve from the two of us but also friends and family in supporting us along the way.  For each training session we have at least one support car following our route and meeting us at various points en route.  For the event itself we will have two cars of 3 people in each to make sure we remain fed and watered and upright.  Our crews help is essential and appreciated, and make it a real team event.

Why?

Which leads I guess to this page and the reason (I hope) that you are here.  We are undertaking this event in support of CLIC Sargent, the charity that cares for children with cancer.  Please visit the charity's page - it explains far better than we could all the fantastic work they do.

That is all for now - please give as generously as you are able - we do really appreciate the time you have taken just to come here and read this.

Many thanks,

Alex and Steve
