Ellie supported a number of charities throughout her short and active life and gave unstintingly of her time and energy to help others in every way she could. The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund was perhaps the project Ellie supported most passionately -- both captivated by the unique majesty of Mountain Gorillas and horrified at the precarity of their continued existence as a species.

From a young age, Ellie sponsored Pasika, an orphaned gorilla from the Virunga volcano region of Rwanda and regularly gave talks on the plight of the rainforests and their wildlife.

Gorillas are beautiful, resilient animals. But poaching and habitat destruction have pushed their populations to the brink of extinction in recent decades.

The Fund's brave founder, Dian Fossey, knew that gorillas need human help to survive the future. Today, the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund is dedicated to continuing her work to protect gorillas while helping and educating the people who live near them.
