I took up running 2 ½ years ago as a new challenge to help me give up smoking following the deaths of both my parents from brain haemorrhages. I was surprised how much I enjoyed running & was persuaded to enter my first half marathon - the first competitive event since sports day aged 10 - & it was fantastic & from that experience I wanted to run the London Marathon.  This year, not only did I get a place through the ballot but I was also chosen by Running Fitness magazine to be part of their team for the marathon, you can read about me, my attempts at training & my hopeful success in the magazine commencing in the March issue.  I feel very lucky to be doing this and I would like to try & help others whilst I am having fun doing what I want to do.  My chosen charity is Facing The World because I was so deeply moved by a documentary on channel 4 showing their work.  A team of surgeons & other medical staff transform the faces of severely disfigured children from impoverished countries, they give their time & their skills for free. These children are often ostracised by their societies and have no access to the medical care that we in the western world take for granted.  The difference the surgery makes to them physically, emotionally & psychologically is tremendous.  Please see the website http://www.facingtheworld.net/ for more information and details of some of the children who have been helped.  The work of this charity is amazing and it is so rare in this age of celebrity culture to find people who do something for nothing.   Facing The World needs funds to carry on  this work so please give generously and help change a child’s life forever.
