Story

Enham Sunday Riders do Land's end to Andover

Thanks for visiting the fundraising page of Enham Sunday Riders, we are a group of six friends who are keen on cycling, we are organising a sponsored bike ride from Land's End to our home town of Andover (Hampshire) over the weekend of 26th - 28th June. We intend to raise funds for both Headway and for Clic Sargent.

We thought as two of group had benefited from both these charities that we would try and give back, more than we had benefited. If everyone who was able to do this, by repaying what they had benefited, more people could be helped.

Why Headway?

A member of the group Jake Allison who suffered a very severe (so he was told) head injury was involved in a road traffic accident in June of 2007. This resulted in him being in a coma for  3 weeks,  with major injures which included: internal bleeding, broken ribs, punctured lungs, a broken hip (which has resulted in his leg being just over two inches shorter than the other), broken collar-bones, metal plates in his jaw and shoulder. After emergency treatment he spent over 5 months in Bath Head Injury Unit recovering. After returning home for 6 months, Jake started a return to work, unfortunately this failed after 12 weeks and he was retired due to ill health.

Jake has now recovered along with the help of the charity Headway, allowing him to return to the activities that he used to enjoy – well, some of them!  One of these activities was cycling.  Jake used to thoroughly enjoy cycling and mountain biking.  In fact Jake used to ride his children to school in a bike trailer, and then ride onto work.  Unfortunately Jake was under the impression that he possibly wouldn't be able to ride a bike again, that was until September of last year!  After managing to stay upright on his mountain bike, Jake decided to buy a road bike and began to cycle every day and two weeks later he completed his first 50 mile timed event along with the other members of the Enham Sunday Riders, who supported him to make this achievement.

Jake continues to enjoy his cycling, and feels a lot of this is due to the rehabilitation he has received from Headway and would like to pay them back by doing this event and raising funds to enable others to enjoy the benefits that Headway as a charity has to offer.
