46000 CHALLENGE · 18 September 2006

We are a leading UK environmental charity dedicated to protecting our ocean - defending crucial habitats, regenerating vital ecosystems and inspiring volunteers. We unite communities, governments, and industry, to champion science-based solutions for cleaner, healthier seas.

Story

I was shocked to read that, according to the United Nations, there are on average 46000 pieces of plastic litter per every square mile of ocean world-wide, causing the deaths of an estimated 100,000 marine mammals and 1 million seabirds every year. I felt I must try to do something! I have therefore set myself the challenge to 'save' one square mile of ocean by collecting (& re-cycling) 46000 pieces of litter whilst walking on my local beaches - as part of the MCS's Coastal Challenge campaign. I am making art from the litter too in order to raise awareness of the issues. I think it will take me at least 50 walks to achieve my 46000 target but it's for a very good cause. Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. The Marine Conservation Society will receive your money quickly and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you. So please sponsor me now! To see more about my progress, please visit my website www.flyintheface.com and if you would like to join in and help with my 46000 challenge - or start your own! - please e-mail me at fran@flyintheface.com. A big thank-you for your support and remember when visiting our beaches leave nothing but your footprints... Fran x ......PLEASE NOTE: END DATE IS SEPTEMBER 2007, NOT DECEMBER 2006. WE'RE STILL WALKING!!
