Habitat for Humanity South Africa faces some very difficult and challenging problems as they come to terms with the Aids pandemic that is sweeping the country. The effect on South Africa's population is devastating and this is particularly evident with the rapidly climbing numbers of children orphaned through Aids.
We will be going as a team to Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal. The area is one of great poverty and hardship and the orphan crisis is beginning to take its toll on the community as they come to terms with trying to take care of children who, following the deaths of their parents are left to live in destitute conditions.
Once we are there we will work on a project with the local community to assist with the building of houses for the children who have been orphaned. We will be involved in clearing and levelling the site, hauling dirt, digging foundations, transferring delivery of materials such as sand, gravel, cement blocks and bags of cement, manually pressing cement blocks, manually mixing cement, finishing floors and filling masonry joints with cement.
