Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

This is a very personal challenge for me and, no doubt, a very emotional one. I'm going to cycle from my home in Glasgow to the Liver Intensive Care Unit at Kings College Hospital in London non-stop. Leaving midnight Saturday 28th October, hopefully arriving in London on Monday 30th October to say a personal "thank you" to the team in Liver ICU.

The reason...?

As some of you may know...I had to return from New York on 26th July 2017 having received a call telling me that my son had "acute liver failure", and he was critically ill. He was to be rushed from Bristol to King's College Hospital, Liver ICU in London and that I should get there as soon as possible.

I arrived 24 hours later to find him in an induced coma, fully intubated, on life support and dyalisis, fighting for his life. Any parents worst nightmare.

We were then told on the 28th July that his best option was a Liver Transplant and over that weekend he was the highest priority patient in the UK.

Some of the darkest time followed that weekend for the whole family, however, on the 1st/2nd August the Consultants told us that he was making inprovements and they had decided to take him off the transplant list! Wow...so many emotions!

He missed his birthday on the 31st July being in that coma, however, the very best present that he could have received was after 50 days in ICU, over 35 in a coma, he was able to leave the ward and return to a local hospital in Bristol. Then a week later, he was deemed well enough to be able to walk out of the hospital and go home!

An absolute minor miracle, considering what he had been through in the previous 7/8 weeks. Our prayers had been answered.

This cycle is my way of saying a massive...THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to The Team in the Liver ICU Unit for the amazing skill, care, kindness, dedication and love that you demonstrated and offered our family over these very dark days and weeks. Collectively you saved his life and for that we are forever indebted to you all.

Consultants, Doctors, Nurses, Physiotherapists, Support Staff etc....you do the most incredible job....

Please, please help me help this incredible hospital unit, here is a little information regards them and the work they do!
