Story
Hello, my name is Courtney Cassidy and I am a sophomore in high school. Earlier this summer I was looking for volunteer opportunities or any way that I could support my community, but nothing was jumping out at me. I decided to write down a list of my hobbies/interests, and the first thing I wrote was baking. Then I found a way to help a good cause that I'm passionate about while doing something that I love: selling baked goods for the Mercy Education Project.
I've had many great opportunities growing up, such as a quality education, and I would like to help give other girls in the Detroit area similar opportunities to prepare for their future. The Mercy Education Project provides tutoring, educational summer camps, and literacy programs that prepare girls and women in Detroit for college and joining the workforce. I believe that education is extremely important, and I'm blessed to have been educated throughout my life, but I know that this is not the reality for many young women in Detroit. With your help, I will be able to donate to the Mercy Education Project to change the lives of girls and women in Detroit.
As I was working out the logistics of starting Baking for Education, I contacted my friend Eliza Thayer who happily agreed to help me. We have been working together to develop recipes, packaging, and much more to make sure that Baking for Education succeeds. We are taking certain safety precautions such as wearing a mask and gloves while baking and cleaning all surfaces before and after we work on them to assure our supporters that the baked goods they are purchasing are safe to eat.
