Story

Hi I’m Blythe, I’ll be 6 years old in October, I love Dinosaurs, Star Wars, Ice Cream and loads of Chocolate! So I’ve chosen to do this event to raise money for the Birmingham Children's Hospital Critical Journeys Appeal, because not only are they all awesome but they also helped save my life! I want to help them reach their target so they can help many more children, so please please please donate whatever you can. I promise I will run this really really fast because  I have a party to go to straight afterwards.

Thanks a million.

This is my story...

Blythe had a bumpy start to life.  He unexpectedly suffered a respiratory arrest at seven days old and we so nearly lost him.  In what seemed like no time at all the Birmingham Children's Hospital KIDS Retrieval Team were with us in A&E and went to work on stabilising him enough to move him to Paediatric Intensive Care unit (PICU).  From the moment we were introduced to Mary and her team, they went about providing as much care for us as parents as they did for our tiny Blythe.

We then spent 12 very long days on intensive care, whilst the staff fought endlessly to keep him going and to get to the bottom of what was causing our beautiful boy to be so unwell. Their hard work paid off and we finally found out that Blythe had been born with a very unusual spine and vascular network, causing uncontrollable blood pressure, loss of function in one kidney and was in danger of losing function in the other.  Successful interventional surgery followed, which allowed Blythe to begin to breathe again on his own and for us to move off PICU. We were then placed in the wonderful care of Dr Catherine O’Brien and the amazing team on Ward One.  Then before we knew it we were able to take our little warrior home.

Blythe continues to be looked after by several amazing teams at Birmingham Children’s Hospital but without the KIDs Retrival Team he may have never had the chance to live life to the fullest. This is his way of saying thank you.

Anything at all you can donate will be very gratefully received and goes towards the most worthwhile cause.  Thank you so much for visiting our page and taking the time to read Blythe’s story.

Critical Journeys Appeal. Help us reach our goal by supporting the appeal, so our KIDS/NTS team can respond faster and more effectively to critically ill babies and children, making sure vulnerable patients and their families get to the right place, at the right time for the right treatment.
