Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page. Simon and Jason are walking 30 miles in one day over the Peak District in the hope you give us your hard earned cash. We are basically two fat ginger blokes so at the very least please donate because you pity us.
We are raising money for Meningitis Now, a charity that does lots of great work for families whose lives have been affected by meningitis. A few years ago our friend's daughter (Flora) contracted meningitis leading to a lot of time spent in hospital and follow up treatment and appointments. This was an extremely distressing time for all the family and they were thankful for the support they got from this great charity. This is their story below-
"Like many eight week old babies Flora had a disturbed night on 22nd January 2015. Nothing seemed to soothe her and at that stage she didn't have any of the typical meningitis symptoms. It was by sheer luck that Jo (her mum) took her for her routine injections at 9.30 the next morning. Injections that would so cruelly have protected her against pneumococcal menigitis which we found out in time was what she had. It only took a few hours for Flora to go from a healthy eight week old to being revived at Lincoln hospital and put on a life support machine as she didn't have the strength to breath on her own. We were quickly transferred to paediatric intensive care in Nottingham and for three days waited to see. Then on the Sunday morning after an indescribable raft of emotions, Flora defied the odds and woke up. We stayed in hospital for another two weeks and had the best day when we were able to bring her home so she could boss her sister around! She is just such a bundle of energy and has such an infectious zest for life. In time we will learn more about what damage it has done but we know Meningitis Now will support us whatever. Flora did not have the rash nor could we match many of the other signs as she was so young. I cannot urge people enough to check out the symptoms. There are 200 reported cases of pneumococcal meningitis a year and never thought it would happen to us. But it did and with it it changed our whole outlook on life. Meningitis Now gave us the most amazing support - whether you sponsorship is big or small it will make a massive difference."
