Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. I am running the London Marathon for the Royal British Legion on 22nd April 2018.
2 years ago I was a non-runner so the fact that I am tackling one of the worlds iconic marathon courses terrifies the living daylights out of me!!! However it is for a very special reason, and I hope you will support me.
11 years ago in January 2007 my husband John, a serving soldier, took his own life. We were stationed in Northern Ireland and my children were 3 and 2.
To be honest I had no idea what to do. The paperwork was building up and just keeping me and the kids alive at the end of each day was a bonus!! Through the welfare network, the Royal British Legion got in touch and offered a hand of support.....in the form of a lovely caseworker called Rosemary. She helped me with all the admin, and most importantly helped me to stand on my own two feet and help myself.
Nothing was too much trouble and she gave me the confidence to find my own way in those first difficult months. Importantly, she also helped me secure a RBL grant so I could move back to England. The grant paid for shipping my belongings back to the mainland and was an enormous help.
The RBL provide hundreds of families just like mine with invaluable support in their time of need.
I know they’ve helped dear friends of mine deal with struggles with severe PTSD following active service in theatres of war. It was too little too late for John back in 2007, but with the RBLs help the future of our war veteran’s mental health is improving.
