Story

A stroke can happen to anyone of any age, even children, and can have devastating consequences to people’s lives, who often say they feel their life has been completely turned upside down. As a condition, stroke has always been the poor relation to other conditions such as heart disease and cancer, in terms of attention and funding.

With this in mind the idea of a Strokely Come Dancing event was suggested, to try to raise awareness of stroke, and also to raise much needed funds for the stroke unit at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital and Community Stroke team through Sheffield Hospitals Charity, to really help both stroke survivors and their families.

A fantastic extravaganza is to take place at the city centre’s stunning St Paul’s Mercure Hotel, on evening of 11th November 2016. The management team at the Mecure have generously donated their hotel free of charge for the event.

The funds raised will help buy much needed specialist seating, mobility equipment, new technologies in speech and language therapy and provide funding for local support groups; Different Strokes Group, and Carer Stroke Support Group, for stroke survivors and their families. It will also help fund specialist training for the stroke team to further improve the quality of care for patients, and will enable the stroke team to raise awareness of stroke to local Sheffield people.

The hospital together with the community stroke team are taking part in the event. This include doctors, nurses, therapists and psychologists, who have never danced before. They have been practicing their dances tirelessly after work, with the help of Helen Taylor's Dancing School. Helen and her team have selflessly provided dancing lessons in their own time free of charge. The commitment of both Helen and the stroke team has been second to none.

Please give generously for this extremely worthy cause
Many thanks
