We’re volunteering to raise funds for the work of The Christina Noble Children's Foundation (CNCF, www.cncf.org) in Mongolia to save and educate children.

Unfortunately, at present in Mongolia there is an unfavorable situation for the survival of street children and children from poor families. A very high unemployment rate with a lot of people living beyond poverty, which is accompanied by such problems as alcoholism, child abuse, lack of care for children, a very high number of street children living in dangerous conditions.

The education and health care systems currently do not allow children with disabilities or from poorest families to study and receive medical care.

The Christina Noble Children's Foundation (CNCF) was founded in 1989 by Irish Christina Noble (see film “Noble” about her life).
The organization built a village in Mongolia in which street children live and receive shelter, medical care and the opportunity to learn. The program is aimed at saving and educating children so that they have a decent future.

Chimeg*, being 9 years old, came to live at the Blue Skies Ger Village after she with her older sister witnessed the murder of their mother in a brutal domestic violence event. At first, Chimeg was extremely withdrawn and did not want to talk. CNCF’s team gave her the space to express her grief in her own way and at her own pace. Over the years, she has worked closely with psychosocial team who used a variety of techniques including art and play therapy to help her communicate and release some of the common feelings associated with grief, such as anger, sadness, fear and guilt. With time, Chimeg began to open up and feel secure in expressing her emotions. She started to make friends and form emotional connections with the team.

In addition to providing emotional support, team encouraged Chimeg to express herself through her favourite activities like dancing. She’s incredibly talented and always lights up the stage with her radiant smile and captivating energy. After she completed high school, she began to study hairdressing, and later moved to live with older sister who now has a family of her own.

Batu*, 3 years old, lives in a small hut with his family in extreme poverty because of father’s disease. Batu was often left home without supervision, food, heating, or mental stimulation which resulted in malnutrition, two prominent scars from self-inflicted burns, lack of basic cognitive and social skills, he often got angry and upset.

CNCF team enrolled him in the Blue Skies Day Care where he received love, care and stimulation that he needs to grow into a happy and healthy person. Batu has shown significant improvements. He now takes part in activities and conversations with great interest and confidence. Because of CNCF’s sponsorship programme, Batu’s living conditions have also improved and his family got funds to afford living essentials.

The problem

Mongolia as a nation is at an incredibly precarious time in its development. Its capital Ulaanbaatar has 1.4 million residents, even though the city was originally designed and engineered to support a mere 400,000. This immense overpopulation and its subsequent large-scale unemployment are the root of many systemic societal dysfunctions, like alcoholism, domestic violence, child abuse and neglect, and families living in extreme destitution.

Mongolia's educational system has made great strides in recent years, however, children with disabilities or children from the very poorest families still struggle to access educational system.

Despite substantial progress nationwide, disparities remain in access to quality healthcare. The state healthcare system is inaccessible for many of the poorest families who are unemployed, for people living in rural areas, and in many cases, lack official documents and paperwork. Air quality in capital, poor diets and substance abuse are also significant problems in Mongolia.

The Christina Noble Children's Foundation

CNCF was established in 1989 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, by Irishwoman Christina Noble (see film “Noble” about her life).

In 1997 Christina extended the work of her Foundation into Mongolia after an investigative visit to its capital city Ulaanbaatar, where she was shocked to discover thousands of sick and destitute street children living in horrendous conditions throughout the city sewers and manholes, many of who were struggling to survive. Sewers are children’s only refuge from harsh Mongolian winter with temperature at –30°C for weeks.

Christina Noble Children’s Foundation established its flagship project in Mongolia Blue Skies Ger Village for abandoned, and neglected children in need of protection, shelter, rehabilitative care, education, and the opportunity to break the cycle of poverty. Without Christina and her Foundation, there is little doubt that many of these children would not have survived.

Since 1997 almost thousand children have received life-saving services at Blue Skies Ger Village.
