The Mission
Two local young men have accepted a charity challenge to raise much needed funds for a clean water project in India. In March 2010 Chris Hogg and Will Halliday will make the gruelling 2000 mile journey from the south-western city of Cochin to the remote northern province of Sikkim in only two weeks. This race against time will be completed in a three wheeled Tuk Tuk or Rickshaw. Not known for being the most reliable form of transport, the Tuk Tuk itself will have it's work cut out. Powered by a tiny 145.45cc two stroke engine which creates a belting 7hp and weighs in at a mighty 277kg, it will struggle to carry each of Chris and Will's 6ft frames. Progress will be further slowed down thanks to a top speed of 34mph. Loud, uncomfortable, prone to breaking down and completely useless at protection from the elements they are possibly the least suitable vehicles for covering the entire Indian sub-continent in 2 weeks.
The cramped driving conditions and lack of mechanical expertise will only add to the challenges faced by Will and Chris as they negotiate the perilous road conditions without a support team. Accommodation is not laid on either and at times Will and Chris will have to camp out next to their Tuk Tuk.
Why are they using their annual leave to do this?
In India over 585,000 children aged under five die every year of waterborne diseases. These avoidable deaths are a result of poor sanitation and dirty drinking water, but with your help we can do something about this tragic situation: With your help we can ensure that these children have access to clean water and proper sanitation.
FRANK Water Projects is a small charity that funds sustainable, safe, clean drinking water projects by installing village filtration facilities. These plants use up to 6 filters including ultra violet and reverse osmosis technology which remove viruses, bacteria and chemicals from the drinking water. Projects are funded by FRANK, but community owned and run. Since 2005 FRANK has funded the installation of over 30 projects in India benefiting over 220,000 people. Many more projects are currently under development, with 16 of them due to be completed by March 2010. Once a project is set up, it is owned, run and maintained by the local community with support workers on hand to provide advice when needed. Local operators from each village are trained to operate and maintain the facility. Each filtration facility costs around £7,000 and provides clean, safe drinking water for up to 7,000 people in the village and surrounding communities.
This means that every pound donated will provide, clean,
healthy drinking water for one person for life!
Chris and Will aim to raise £7,000 to help towards the essential work that FRANK Water Projects needs to do in the region. Please help them to raise funds towards an essential clean water project by making a donation. With your help, we can help to provide communities with clean drinking water and sanitation and help put a stop to avoidable infant deaths.
