Early in the morning on 21 July I'll be swimming across the  for charity (this seemed like a good idea when sat in a warm pub).

The is over 2 kilometres wide at it narrowest point (map on left) and the water is pretty chilly. There's a big incentive to get across in a decent time as tides can run at 6 knots so if we don't make it before the tide turns we’ll probably end up out in the Channel (France for lunch?)!
