An update to our story...

As many of you know, our mum passed away in September 2005 aged just 49. She had been diagnosed with bowel cancer seven weeks prior to this. In order to prevent others from going through this tragedy, we would like to tell you our story and raise awareness of this taboo subject.

A year prior to her death, our mum had been a picture of good health. In early 2005 she began experiencing various symptoms. She suffered from what she believed to be a condition called piles. This lead to severe weight loss. As a family, we urged her to visit the doctor on several occasions.  However, both her and our lack of knowledge on this subject lead us to believe it was a minor condition. Finally in late July 2005 she visited a doctor who immediately referred her to a specialist. She was diagnosed in August 2005 with bowel cancer.

It was only after our Mum's diagnosis that we became aware of how common this cancer is, yet it remains unspoken about. Bowel cancer is the second biggest cancer killer in the UK. Only lung cancer kills more people. 35,500 people will be diagnosed with the disease this year, and around half of these will die. But the good news is - it is one of the most curable cancers if caught early enough.

 

On the 14^th October 2006, we held a fundraising Diwali Dinner and Dance in memory of our Mum. Our aim was to raise as much money as possible for the Charity Beating Bowel Cancer as well as raising awareness of the disease. We are pleased to announce that through the event, we have so far raised £11,000. This is an excellent amount which we are extremely proud of. We want to say a massive thank you to everyone who has either donated online, bought raffle tickets or attended on the night. Your support has been invaluable. Thank you also to all of our donors and sponsors who helped us to make the evening a huge success. We are keen to carry on raising money so please keep forwarding this link to as many people as possible. It is still not too late to make an online donation.
