Peru Cycling Challenge · 6 February 2006

The number of people diagnosed with cancer is growing, we're doing whatever it takes to help more people with cancer get the best care the UK has to offer, whoever and wherever they are. To donate, volunteer, raise money or campaign with us, call 0300 1000 200 or visit macmillan.org.uk

Story

HOME AGAIN... and it was amazing!  Fantastic people, fantastic scenery, fantastic cycling, a fantastic amount of money raised by the group for Macmillan (£142,000 at last count from the 40 of us on the trip, but money is still coming in) – and my fears of mountains that I couldn’t climb, revolting weather and horrendous camping all failed to materialise.  Basically the trip of a lifetime.

You can see the route we took and photos from the trip at:
http://www.lepetitgibus.nildram.co.uk/peru.htm

We cycled approx 485km over 6 days, starting at 3,800 metres above sea level and going as high as 4,300 metres (the altitude was a real challenge, although I was definitely much luckier than some in how it affected me) and camping at night.  Day 5 was the challenge cycling day, 75km off-road uphill/mountain.  It was the hardest day's cycling by a long way that I have ever done but also the best - the most fantastic views all the way up, and the most fantastic team achievement when we all got to the top.

So thank you everyone again for supporting me and Macmillan, and giving me the opportunity to be involved in something like this.  Having been bitten by both the exercise and fundraising bug, I've just started on my training for the 2007 London Marathon, so if you didn't get the chance to sponsor me for Peru, please feel free to visit my London Marathon sponsorship page and make a donation!  www.justgiving.com/harrietlondonmarathon

Many thanks.

best wishes
Harriet
