Story
I'm Lindsay Harrison. I'm an equine vet and an amateur eventer from North Yorkshire. Over the years I've seen plenty of friends receive an unscheduled trip in the Yorkshire Air Ambulance as a result of falls whilst eventing, racing and hunting. For a couple of them this has literally meant the difference between life and death. I find it hard to believe that such an important life-saving service relies on charitable donations to survive and is not government funded.
Starting on the 6th of June I am going to walk the Coast to Coast route. This is 195 miles long and runs from St. Bees on the Cumbrian coast to Robin Hood's Bay on the North Yorkshire coast. The route takes in some of the highest and most spectacular parts of the country. The first few days are spent crossing the Lake District: Ennerdale, Stonethwaite, Grasmere and Patterdale; before crossing the M6 near Shap and climbing the Yorkshire Dales from Kirkby Stephen to Keld and Reeth then down to Richmond. After a long, flat day across the Vale of Mowbray the path climbs again over the North York Moors rising to Blakey Ridge, Glaisdale, Egton Bridge and Grosmont before dropping through Littlebeck and Hawsker to finish with a cliiftop section culminating at Robin Hood's Bay.
I will be walking the route in 12 days. Some of the earlier days in the Lake District are extremely challenging and 10 miles per day will be an achievement, whereas in the middle and latter stages it should prove possible to walk up to 23 miles a day. I shall be walking alone and mostly staying overnight in hostels
Those who know me will probably be surprised by my choice of challenge. I usually drive the 400 yards to the stables and found that walking an Intermediate XC course left me with little energy to ride it! However training commenced on the 2nd of January and I remain committed to getting as many miles under my belt ahead of the event as possible.
Whether you ride, hunt or event in Yorkshire or merely pass through on the A1/M1/M62 occasionally, it is an unfortunate and hopefully unlikely fact that you may one day need the assisstance of the Air Ambulance. Please support me and hope that they can continue to fly and save lives for as long as people need them.
