My reason for running this years Great North Run is a very personal one.

Many of you may or may not know that my mother was diagnosed with lung cancer almost 2 yrs ago. Watching her as she struggled through chemotherapy plus radiotherapy was very humbling indeed, and made me take a long look at myself.

For years I had whinged about being fat and unfit, but could never be bothered to actually do anything about it. Well, my mother was the motivation I needed.

Since then I have lost 40lbs in weight, and have joined the gym and taken up running.  My one aim was to do the Great North Run, because if my mum could go through what she had to endure, the least I could do would be to run 13 miles.

I didnt intend to do this for sponsorship, as Im sure many people are sick of being asked for sponsor money for one reason or another. However, cancer affects many of our lives in one way or another. The people of Derwentside are fortunate to have a wonderful resource in the community like Willow Burn, which relies heavily on donations from the public.

On a personal note, the staff there cared for my Grandmother some 20yrs ago, and were truly fantastic. They made the last few weeks of her life very comfortable, and more memorable for us, her family. Who knows what the future holds for any of us, but if myself or any of my family needed hospice care, I would look no further than Willow Burn.

I havent decided on a target, I guess I just want to raise as much as I can.
